As natural resources become increasingly scarce and environmental challenges intensify, the circular economy has emerged as a key strategy for sustainable development. The European Union is strongly committed to this transition and is backing it with robust policy frameworks and dedicated funding instruments.

One of the EU’s flagship programs, Horizon Europe, supports projects that align with the green and digital transitions, aiming to accelerate innovation and resilience across industries. The program funds initiatives that promote climate-neutral, circular, and digitalised production processes, while also strengthening supply chains by reducing dependence on critical raw materials.

In parallel, the EU is pushing for a systemic shift in food and bioeconomy sectors, encouraging not only technological innovation but also sustainable business models and governance practices across the entire value chain.

A particularly important funding source for circular economy initiatives is the LIFE Programme’s Circular Economy and Quality of Life sub-programme. This sub-programme supports projects that develop and demonstrate innovative solutions for waste prevention, resource efficiency, and circular business models, directly contributing to the EU’s climate and environmental goals.

These efforts are framed within the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, which proposes concrete measures to address every stage of a product’s lifecycle: from eco-design and durability to reusability, repairability, and recyclability. It also supports business models like “product-as-a-service,” helping shift the focus from ownership to functionality.

At the heart of these initiatives lies the ambition of the European Green Deal: to build a cleaner, fairer, and more competitive economy while drastically reducing environmental impact.

What does EU funding support?

European funding acts as a powerful enabler to:

  • Develop circular technologies in resource-intensive sectors (plastics, electronics, batteries, textiles, construction, food…)

  • Support business models based on sustainability and circularity

  • Strengthen the resilience of supply chains amid global disruptions

  • Advance toward climate neutrality and efficient resource use

The circular economy is no longer a vision for the future—it's a priority for the present.

With strategic support from the EU, innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand to build a more resilient and competitive Europe.
